Time-lapse evolution – integrated optimization by MENTZ
Shift and block planning is a complex process with many moving parts. MENTZ has introduced an integrated shift and block optimizer – GENIOS – whose innovative calculation returns the best results and gives you complete control of all variables, thus surpassing many competing products. The innovation is GENIOS’s ability to create shifts and blocks simultaneously instead of one after the other. The result is cost and time reductions for personnel and vehicles, targeted avoidance of split shifts and long walks for deployed drivers, and visualized solutions that are easy to compare. In short, the optimum has been achieved!
It may sound easy, but the details represent a complicated calculation that takes its cue from Nature: It’s like time-lapse evolution. “Evolution uses a similar method,” says Christoph Mentz. “Our system calculates various solution approaches at the same time and returns optimal solutions for the ambient variables set. While Nature requires millions of years for an optimal solution that adapts a species to its environment, we have given our software a genetic algorithm whose efficiency makes it look like a time-lapse of that function.”
Optimization and perfect balance
The optimization process can be controlled at any time. Optimization parameters can be adjusted during runs, and the effects are immediately visible. The optimizer functions as a white box – all variables, such as maximum driving times, works agreements, charging times for e-vehicles, depot capacities, and break times are always transparent and easily adjustable. The target for scheduling can thus focus on optimum shifts or maximizing savings and perfectly balance all necessary variables. The integrated approach can be applied to the scenarios and needs of all transportation companies, even when subcontractors are involved.
Improved scheduling results, easy to use
Existing duty schedules can be imported into the optimizer, and individual assessment rules can be added via drag and drop. Results can be displayed graphically. This facilitates comparability of current and newly optimized block and duty schedules. Statistical and graphical assessments allow optimal use of resources while also relieving the strain on the workforce.
“Using the integrated optimization module helps transport companies optimally prepare for future challenges – whether they take over the controls themselves or order optimization as a service from MENTZ. Practical tests have shown that the MENTZ optimizer works outside of the laboratory, too. The results so far show that in developing integrated optimization, we have met an important demand,” says Christoph Mentz.
